Massimiliano Lega began his academic journey by earning a Master's Degree and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering. His most recent achievement is the "Italian national scientific qualification” awarded for Full Professor positions in the academic field “Sanitary and Environmental Engineering" bestowed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research.

During the initial decade of his career, he concentrated on developing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for civil applications and represented Italian university and research centers in European-funded projects focused on advancing UAV design and safety.

In the past 19 years, he transitioned his focus to Sanitary Environmental Engineering, specializing in the study of pollution phenomena, Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Monitoring and Characterization, Environmental Forensics and Environmental Situational Awareness. He utilizes advanced remote/proximal sensing techniques and technologies, such as satellites, aircraft, drones, and in-situ methods. He introduced innovative methods for detecting environmental contamination, integrating in-situ analysis with multispectral remote/proximal sensing techniques into a unique multilayer synoptic representation. Over the past years, he has improved the workflow by integrating bio-tracking, bio-monitoring, and bio-magnification using specific bio-indicators. The methods of prof. Lega has been validated by several Italian Government Agencies and is also utilized in official forensic activities for detecting pollution and environmental crimes (Environmental Forensics).

Currently, Massimiliano Lega serves as a Professor at the Department of Engineering of the University of Naples Parthenope (Italy), where he teaches various classes on Environmental Engineering themes

He also leads the SAFE research team (Situational Awareness for Environment) and oversees two labs ("Environmental Monitoring and Forensics Integrated Lab" and "Integrated Systems Mobile Lab for Environment and Situational Awareness"), fostering interdisciplinary research across engineering and other domains.

Moreover, he has held positions such as Scientific Advisor of the Minister and Head of the Office and Scientific Secretary of the Undersecretary of State at the Italian Ministry for Environment, Land, and Sea Protection. Actively involved in various committees, research projects, and international collaborations focused on environmental protection and engineering.

Massimiliano Lega has authored numerous technical publications, served as a guest editor and reviewer for international scientific journals, and made significant contributions to the field through research, teaching, and leadership roles.

Side notes:

Recent research findings have been widely covered across global media platforms including TV networks like Associated Press and CNN, as well as national and international magazines and newspapers such as Wired, Le Scienze (the Italian edition of Scientific American), Corriere della Sera, and Il Sole 24 Ore etc.. Furthermore, National Geographic featured a cover story highlighting Professor Lega's work on "Voices".  It is possible to watch some videos featuring these technologies on YouTube ( link
